Step through the great portal of the Registan and the ornament only intensifies. Samarkand's craftsmen faced every surface of this courtyard in glazed tile — cobalt, turquoise and gold worked into script, star and geometric lattice — beneath a fluted dome that has held its colour for centuries. 

The tall Iwan draws the eye inward past tiers of arched niches, young trees softening a stone court that once formed the ceremonial heart of Timur's capital. It remains one of the most complete expressions of Islamic art anywhere on the Silk Road.
