An Itch in Green — Stray Dogs of Nicaragua (Peta Kaplan) - Canvas

Painted entirely in cool greens, a dog turns to scratch itself — head dipped to a raised hind leg, the whole body curled into that ordinary, unselfconscious moment every dog knows. Peta catches it as something almost sculptural, the animal folded into the green like part of the landscape.

An original oil painting by Peta Kaplan, from a series painted during the five years she and Ben made their home in the colonial city of Granada, Nicaragua. 

The streets were full of strays, and Peta didn't only paint them — she cared for them, volunteering at the local clinic and serving on an emergency response team for animals that were wounded or abandoned.
