Two dogs stand together against depthless blue; one facing you square on, the other turned away, half-dissolved into the ground. They are the same street, the same hunger, the same waiting. What separates them is only which side of a line they happen to stand on.

An original oil painting by Peta Kaplan, from a series painted during the five years she and Ben made their home in the colonial city of Granada, Nicaragua.

The streets were full of strays. She didn't only paint them; she cared for them, volunteering at the local clinic and serving on an emergency response team for animals that were hurt or abandoned. Each dog is met as an individual.
