Inside the walls of Ichan Kala, Khiva's market square has been a meeting point for more than a thousand years — a stop on the Silk Road where caravans unloaded silk, spice and turquoise-glazed ceramics before pushing on across the Kyzylkum desert. Today the same square opens beneath minarets and sun-baked brick, its traders still calling out beneath the same skyline.
