Samarkand's craftsmen worked in cobalt, turquoise and gold, setting glazed tile into geometry that has held its color for six hundred years. This doorway glows the way the city's builders intended — light catching the vitrified surface, the arch drawing the eye inward toward a threshold that generations of travelers passed through on their way east.
