An original oil painting by Peta Kaplan, from a series of street dogs she photographed and sketched in Granada, Nicaragua, and painted in her studio in Chicago.

The streets were full of strays, and Peta Kaplan didn't only paint them — she cared for them, volunteering at the local clinic and serving on an emergency response team for animals that were wounded or abandoned.
