Teddy — Stray Dogs of Nicaragua (Peta Kaplan) — Framed Poster (Premium Matte)

Braced on splayed front legs against grey-green with yellow running underneath, Teddy looks off to one side, tan and white and slightly comic in his seriousness — the same small dog from the dark, painted in daylight. 

Teddy had a girlfriend — another stray, always beside him. One day a tourist decided to "save" her, and took her to the United States. We watched Teddy run after the taxi. He never recovered from it, and he stayed sad until he died.

An original oil painting by Peta Kaplan, from a series painted during the five years she and her partner, Ben, made their home in the colonial city of Granada, Nicaragua. 

The streets were full of strays, and Peta didn't only paint them — she cared for them, volunteering at the local clinic and serving on an emergency response team for animals that were wounded or abandoned.
