The Kalta Minor was meant to be the tallest minaret in the Islamic world. Its builder died in 1855 with the tower barely begun, and it was left as it stands — a broad, squat drum sheathed in bands of turquoise, white and cobalt glazed brick, unlike anything else on the Silk Road. 

Here it rises above the old town of Khiva in clear morning light, a line of carved wooden doors running the length of the brick wall below and a second minaret marking the horizon. What was left unfinished became the town's most beloved landmark.
