Look up inside a Samarkand mausoleum and the ceiling dissolves into gold. Craftsmen layered honeycombed muqarnas, painted medallions and interlaced star-work in cobalt and gilt, drawing the eye up to a ribbed cupola at the crown. 

Every surface is worked — there is no empty space, only pattern folding into pattern — a deliberate vision of paradise rendered overhead for those who came to pray and remember. Six centuries on, the gold still holds its light.
